Focusing on anything other than lead generation when you are starting an online business is like waxing and detailing your car and forgetting to put gas in it. You will have a nice looking useless shell if your car won’t drive anywhere.
There are thousands of people out there who desperately want you to promote their ALREADY CREATED products. They have written the promotional emails, they have high converting sales letters, they have a shopping cart solution in place, they have customer support, and they have stats on how well their product converts. These folks can tell you what the best autoresponder to use is. And so on. There is zero need for you to learn and do all of this yourself when you can be building your subscriber list.
This takes daily dedicated action, consider these three points when you need to motivate yourself to focus on lead generation.
1) The concept of the Golden Goose (or Golden Chicken as I like to call it)
I grew up on a farm. We had chickens among other critters. Every day those chickens laid eggs for us. Not an awful lot of eggs, but enough for our use. On a good day we might have gotten 10 eggs. Multiply that times 30 days in a month and we’d often have almost 300 eggs each month. Leads are like eggs. You need to steadily accumulate them each day, and the numbers will grow.
2) More leads = more money.
This depends on several factors such as how targeted your list is, what niche you are in etc. However the general rule of thumb is each lead on your list is worth $1 per month. So if you have a list of 5000 people (not hard to build at all) you can realistically expect to make $5000 per month from it if you cultivate the list properly. Add 1000 more people to your list and that should translate into $1000 extra each month for you. See what I mean? You are wasting your time if you are screwing around with different autoresponder services etc. Just build your subscriber list in the autoresponder you already have. You can always export your list if you decide you absolutely have to move to another autoresponder.
3) Lead generation is a skill just like anything else.
This means you can continue to get better and better at it. It’s like riding a bike. The first time you tried it probably didn’t go so well. But if you kept practicing sooner or later you got the hang of it and if you chose to really focus on your bike riding skills you might be able to enter a Red Bull challenge by now! Since lead generation is the single most profitable way you can spend your time make sure you are always getting better at it. Invest in training courses, try new channels, put your mug in a video on YouTube.
