Gary Halbert (June 12, 1938 – April 8, 2007) was fondly referred to as the “Alpha Shitweasel” and during his decades of direct response marketing success, he laid a lot of the groundwork that most direct marketers still use today.
I was stumped about what to post today – I just got back from an awesomely laid back vacation in Maine, and the ideas just weren’t coming. Whenever I’m in a bind like that, I head over to The Gary Halbert Letter and soak in his cutting, entertaining, and brain-smackingly good rants.
Just reading them gives you a different perspective.
It feels like he’s talking directly to you. That, for me, was probably lesson #1 about writing good copy. Gary Halbert’s copy was never vague. It always feels a little creepy to me, as if he’s in the room and watching me read every word… (who knows, maybe his ghost is haunting each one of those pages)…
I realized after reading a random letter on the site that I couldn’t possibly write about anything more relevant and valuable than Gary’s work.
If you ever struggle with copywriting, or if you’re just looking for an adrenaline boost of excellent, (and still hyper-accurate) know-how on direct marketing, then head over there now and dig in.
You’d be hard pressed to find a better free collection of accurate, intelligent information about direct marketing anywhere online. Although if you think you’ve found something better, feel free to leave a link in the comments.
Chances are, I won’t agree with you, but I’ll take a look.
